This is Part 3 of our 4-part series "Breaking Free from the Approval Trap" (See part one and part two). Next week, we'll explore the daily practices that sustain Marcus's transformation and keep him thriving in substance-free life.

Marcus Discovers His Hidden Truth

Marcus is six weeks into working with me in Recovery Alchemy, and he's frustrated as hell.

"I get it now," he says on our call, his face tight with tension. "I see how desperate I am for validation. I understand it came from my childhood. I know it's connected to my crystal use. So why can't I just... stop?"

He'd spent the past week trying to white-knuckle his way through his approval addiction.

No checking apps.

No fishing for compliments.

No performing at work meetings.

He was going to be completely self-sufficient, independent, need nothing from anyone.

It lasted three days before he crashed hard—checking Grindr compulsively, posting multiple thirst traps, and nearly relapsing when the validation didn't come fast enough.

"I feel like I failed," he says. "Like I'm just as pathetic as before."

This is the moment I've been waiting for. This is where the real transformation begins.

"Marcus," I say, "what if you're not supposed to eliminate your need for validation? What if the goal isn't to stop needing—it's to need differently?"

His face changes. Confusion. Then something like relief.

"What do you mean?"

EP 3:32 Three Ways to Actually Love Yourself in Chemsex Recovery
Ā  There are two reflections I remember from early recovery.Ā  The first one is the morning after one of my benders. Sometimes I would be for over a week. The fluorescent light was causing my skin to look gray, my eyes sunken, my arms bruised from botched slams, and my jaw sore from clenching.Ā  I would stand there and take inventory of everything wrong with me. Liar. Weak. Disgusting. Back to ze...

EP 3:30 Chemsex Recovery: The Glitching Phase
The Space Between The last light rail pickup was at 2am so I had to be checked out by the Taco Restaurant manager and collect my tips by 1:45 so I could run the four blocks to the stop. I learned my lesson after having slept on the bench outside after missing it once. The train would take me all the way across town to my new home: the Golden Leaf Motel. The door was warped, leaving a crack wid...
